The whole controversy started when one night before polls the Dussehra festivities turned sour in Bihar’s Munger district. The incident happened while the immersion of Durga idols. As per the local residents, it is a custom that Badi Durga Maharani’s idol is immersed first but troubles started brewing when the administration suggested immersing the smaller idols first.
The local residents also claimed that the administration was hurrying up the idol immersion process due to the elections and had no patience while dealing with the devotees. Clashes broke out between the devotees and the Police leading to lathi-charge, firing, and stone pelting at the Police at the city’s Deen Dayal Upadhyay Chowk.
One person named Anurag Poddar was killed and 6 persons got injured in the firing by the police. As per the reports the Police is claiming that it fired in the air to disburse the crowd while some ‘unsocial elements’ fired from within the crowd leading to the death of a person. The Police are also claiming that the common people retaliated by firing at the police with local country-made pistols. According to reports, police have detained over 100 people in connection with the incident. Police claimed that they have also recovered 12 empty cartridges and three country-made pistols from the incident site. The injured persons have been admitted to the Sadar hospital.
The incident has ignited political fire the ruling ally BJP was quick in demanding a probe. LJP leader Chirag Paswan also condemned the incident by calling it an example of ‘Taliban rule’ by the ruling JD(U) government. The Grand Alliance also spurred into action and has demanded the dismissal of the Nitish Government from PM Modi. The state government has not issued any official statements yet.
