India records 86,498 new COVID cases, lowest single day figure in last 66 days

Prime Minister Modi also announced that from June 21, 2021, the central government will, once again, start giving free COVID19 vaccines to all its citizens above 18 years of age.

For the first time in the last 66 days, India has reported less than 90 thousand new coronavirus cases in a single day. India recorded 86,498 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours on June 07, 2021, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed.

The number of daily cases came under the 1 lakh mark on Saturday, June 5. With less than 90 thousand daily cases, the weekly positivity rate now stands at 5.94%, whereas, the daily positivity rate is at 4.62%.

As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India’s total COVID-19 caseload has now increased to 2,89,96,473, of which, 13,03,702 are active cases.

The Ministry also informed that 1,82,282 patients recovered from the virus in the last 24 hours. The total number of COVID-19 recoveries across the country rises to 2.73 crores. The recovery rate now stands at 94.29%.

Earlier on Monday, June 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation and expressed condolences for the people who lost their lives in the pandemic. He said that it is due to the untiring efforts put together by our health workers, scientists, and the public at large that we have been able to control this pandemic. He termed the pandemic as the biggest calamity of the last hundred years and said that the country fought the pandemic on many fronts.

Prime Minister Modi also announced that from June 21, 2021, the central government will, once again, start giving free COVID19 vaccines to all its citizens above 18 years of age. Modi said that, as many state governments asked him to decentralize the vaccination process, the central government had passed on 25% of the vaccination processes to the respective central governments. However, within a month itself, it was visible that these governments failed to execute the procedures smoothly.

So far, more than 23 crore vaccine doses have been administered in India.
