Delhi Police files Chargesheet against Sharjeel Imam

The Delhi Police, on Saturday, July 25, filed a 600-page charge sheet against Sharjeel Imam. Deli Police had arrested JNU student Sharjeel Imam for his inflammatory speeches during the anti-CAA and NRC protests in Delhi.

Delhi Police filed the charge sheet against Sharjeel Imam in case FIR No.22/20 u/s 124A (Sedition) 153(A) (Promoting enmity), 153 (Assertion prejudicial to national integration) (promoting enmity, Hatred between different communities, 505 (spreading rumors) IPC and Section 13 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

Imam is accused of delivering seditious speeches.  and inciting Muslims to indulge in unlawful activities, detrimental to sovereignty and integrity of the nation.

In the backdrop of the protests organized to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act, Sharjeel Imam provoked and incited Muslims to break the law and attack the establishment in the name of ‘Fundamental Rights’. He encouraged Muslims to question the sovereignty and integrity of the nation.  

Imam also openly propagated cutting the ‘chicken neck’ that connects mainland India with the North-East. He asked the Muslims to block the train service to the North-East so that the area can be cut-off from the rest of the nation.

In its charge sheet, Delhi Police claimed that Imam also openly defied the Constitution and called it a “fascist” document.

Sharjeel Imam is currently under judicial custody at Guwahati Central Jail. Earlier, a Delhi court granted an extension of 90 days to the Delhi Police to conclude the investigation and file a charge sheet in the case.
